Sources of Joy

  • Four Week Old Baby N
    Baby N has been with us since he was about one week old.  He is growing quickly and is staring to develop quirks and becoming a person, and not just a Winston-Churchill-Lookalike baby.

    He is a great eater.  He tearlessly cries when hungry, and then chugs his formula down with great gusto.
  • Our Extended Support
    There is a whole team of people supporting us with the care of Baby N.  My parents, my parents-in-law, public health workers, social workers, youth workers, and other youth in our home are all supporting Megin and I with baby N.
  • Running
    I am getting such a kick out of running at the moment (ba da bum cheesh!) .  I am enjoying pushing myself, and achieving sub goals on my way to a sub 30 minute 5 km run.

    I enjoy researching training methods and working out ways to achieve my goals efficiently without breaking myself in the process.

    The increased energy levels and feeling of lightness are also most welcome.

  • Cooking
    I never cooked a single meal when I lived in South Korea.  I always purchased ready-to-eat food, or ate out.

    Ditto for my times in the Philippines, Ghana and Uganda. I'd either eat in restaurants, or have my meals prepared by loving folks.

    Now that I am living here in Canada and putting down some roots, I have discovered a new found joy of cooking.  I love shopping for the ingredients, and the whole production line involved with putting a meal together.

    Recent favourites include Confetti Couscous Salad, Three Bean Chili, Tabouli, Mint Iced Tea, and a Spirulina Power Smoothie.

Life is full of joy. You just have to know where to look

My quest to run 5km in under 30 mins

In a previous life, I ran a couple of half marathons.

"Ran" is perhaps too generous a term.  Technically it was running, but practically I had fast walkers over taking me.  Sheer bloody mindedness got me to the finishing lines and I was gonna run the whole why come hell or high-water.

It felt good to finish, but it just wasn't that fast.

Now, I am setting my eyes on a new goal: Run 5 kilometres in under 30 mins.  This is not fast (the world record is 12:37), but is still much faster than a walk!

I have my eyes set on the 5km event at Stanley Park in Vancouver on June 24th.  That's 87 days away.

I have been churning out 5km runs about 4 times a week.  My best time is 32:53.  So I have to shave off about 3 mins over the next three months or so.

Yesterday was a disaster.  I ran too fast too early, crashed late, and came in at an abysmal 36:21.
